HP loses out as global printer sales crash
Wednesday 26 Aug 2009 [10:04]

Worldwide shipments of printers, copiers and multifunctional product (MFP) dropped 20.2% year-on-year to 51.3 million units in the first half of 2009, according to analyst Gartner.

The slide was global, with Eastern Europe, Middle East and Latin America worst hit as shipments declined 41.8%, 28% and 22.9% respectively in the first half of 2009, it said.

Market leader Hewlett-Packard, which has 40% of the market, saw sales slide 26% as Canon grew its market share from 16.8% to 19%.

"The market witnessed a weak demand as both businesses and consumers reduced spending," said Lai-Ling Lam, senior research analyst at Gartner. "The drop in shipments was also impacted by tighter inventory controls in order to minimize inventory levels in the channels."

Lam said shortages of popular low-end inkjets and page printers worsened the situation.
